Performing Umrah according to the Sunnah from Bangladesh
Umrah is a sacred pilgrimage to Makkah that Muslims can perform at any
time of the year, except during the Hajj season. Though it is not
obligatory like Hajj, but has immense rewards. It is a Sunnah of the
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He said
“One Umrah to another is an expiation for what comes in between
them” (Bukhari & Muslim)
If you are a first-time pilgrim and want to know how to perform Umrah
following the Sunnah from Bangladesh, you must read this blog. We have
covered every step in this blog on performing Umrah according to the
Sunnah.
Step-by-step guide to performing Umrah according to the Sunnah
We will discuss how our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed Umrah in his life.
As Muslims, we are encouraged to follow the Sunnah of our Prophet and
complete the Umrah following his path step by step. In this blog, we
will provide a step-by-step guide to perform the whole Umrah journey
according to Sunnah-
1. Preparation and entering the state of Ihram
Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters before beginning Umrah.
Pilgrims must enter the state of Ihram before the Miqat (entry
boundary). The other preparations and rituals are -
Performing Ghusl: Pilgrims may take a bath, trim their nails,
and remove body hair.
Wearing Ihram clothes: Men must wear two white unstitched
clothes, and women can wear any modest, loose-fitting attire without
a face veil or gloves. Men must not cover their heads with a cap,
turban, or cloth (no head covering at all).
Making Intention: Pilgrims may make intention (Niyyah) by
saying “Labbayk Allahumma Umrah”.
Reciting the Talbiyah: Pilgrims then begin reciting the
Talbiyah - “Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la sharika laka
labbayk…”
From this point, certain things become prohibited, such as cutting hair
or nails, applying perfume, and engaging in marital relations.
3. Tawaf (circling the Ka‘bah)
Pilgrims may proceed to perform Tawaf after entering Masjid
al-Haram(Kaaba) in Makkah. Each circuit begins by facing the Black Stone
(al-Hajar al-Aswad), saying:
“Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.”
If touching or kissing the Black Stone is not possible due to crowds,
raise your right hand towards it and say “Allahu Akbar.”
Men uncover their right shoulder during Tawaf (this is called Idtiba) and
walk briskly in the first three rounds (Ramal). Between the Yemeni
Corner and the Black Stone, it is Sunnah to recite:
“Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa
qina 'adhab an-nar” (Qur’an 2:201)
Focus on prayer, reflection, and dhikr. There are no specific du‘as
required for each round, so speak from the heart.
3. Prayer and drinking Zamzam
Pilgrims may pray two rakat salat behind Maqam Ibrahim (if
possible). It is recommended to recite Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah
Al-Ikhlas. Then proceed to drink Zamzam water, which is blessed
and a Sunnah act. Drink it while facing the Qiblah and make
personal supplications. The Prophet ﷺ said-
“Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for” (Ibn
Majah)
4. Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah
Next is Sa‘i, walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah,
located within the Haram Sharif. Begin at Safa, face the Ka‘bah, and
declare:
“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar…”, followed by
personal prayers.
Walk to Marwah (this is one lap), then back to Safa. Complete seven laps
in total, ending at Marwah. Between two green lights in the Sa‘i
area, men jog lightly, while women walk normally
throughout.
Each time you reach Safa or Marwah, face the Qiblah and make heartfelt
du‘a. The Sa‘i commemorates the story of Hajar (peace be upon her), who
ran in search of water for her son Isma'il. Her perseverance is honored
through this sacred ritual.
5. Halq/Taqsir
The final act of Umrah is to shave or trim the hair. Once the hair is
cut, all Ihram restrictions are lifted. The process of Halq-
Men: Strongly encouraged to shave their entire head (Halq) or
at least trim all (Taqsir).
Women: Should cut a fingertip-length (2-3 cm) from the end of
their hair.
